YMF Receives Community Development Grant from LA Council District 9

July 22, 2022

We are thrilled to share that YMF was recently awarded a Community Support Grant from the office of  Councilmember Curren D. Price, Jr. The grant was made in support of our ongoing series of workshops we are providing tuition-free to the community.
Workshops are primarily delivered to YMF partner organizations within the South Central community. First in the series were a unique combination of music technology and production with live percussion for youth served by Volunteers of America (VOA).  Held in March and June, the workshops were enthusiastically received by VOA participant youth ranging from middle school to young adults. Teaching Artist Martin Flores began each workshop with an interactive percussion demonstration that included the basics of rhythm and tempo and featured an engaging call and response exercise where Martin played a rhythm and attendees played it back, all in time and coordinated tempo. Teaching Artist Kenzie Jones then outlined the basic concepts of using Digital Audio Workstation software to create beats and tracks. She then invited participants to a microphone to record sounds of their choosing, such as hand claps and vocalizations. Participants not only engaged with the material presented, themselves, but with each other, exploring and exercising their creativity collectively.
