Our media lab will be open and available to commun

Our media lab will be open and available to community members on Wednesdays from 4-6pm starting August 15. Drop in any time during those hours and use our state-of-the-art workstations to work on beats, songs, compositions, video, or other creative project. Or just drop in if you want to learn about music and media production. There will be an engineer on hand to assist. Check the link in bio if you have any questions.

One of the most exciting aspects of the YMF Center

One of the most exciting aspects of the YMF Center for Music and Creative Technologies is hosting local artists and offering free events to the community, such as our recent “Live at the Center” concert and Q&A featuring singer, songwriter, emcee, poet, and author Jessa Calderon (@jessa_songwriter1 ) of the Chumash and Tongva Nations of Southern California.

This was the first of many more “Live at the Center” and other free community events we’ll be hosting throughout the year.

YMF offers a variety of free instrumental, music production, and media arts classes, workshops and concerts at the YMF Center for Music and Creative Technologies in Historic South Central LA. For more information and to register for classes, visit ymf.org.

This month YMF wrapped up another fantastic semest

This month YMF wrapped up another fantastic semester of programming at the Center for Music and Creative Technologies (CMCT) and celebrated it with our annual Spring Concert!

The concert featured performances from our very own student ensemble, Los South Central Players, highlighted by the the debut of our newest singer Jorge Cruz, our Teaching Artists, and a special collaborative performance with Los South Central Players and Son Jarocho maestros, Los Cambalache. We also highlighted our Audino Trumpet Scholars, and featured a performance from this year’s Sankey Scholar, Briana Reyes, who presented her first composition under the guidance of harp teaching artist, Liza Wallace.

When we celebrate the accomplishments of our students and share a meal with our families and teachers, we are reminded of the connections we’ve built, and of the collective passion and dedication it takes to create enriching and joyful programming. We are grateful for the growth of our students, the support of our families and teaching artists, and the meaningful relationships we continue to build with the community through CMCT.

We believe music is a vehicle for self-love and serves as an affirmation of self-identity. Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were free, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed into effect by President Lincoln.

The promise of freedom implied in the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation was real and very important, as was the eventual enforcement of that order by the Army across the South and into Texas, but the enslaved were ultimately the ones to truly decide what freedom meant to them and who worked to make it a reality.
YMF recognizes the victories commemorated by Juneteenth and the ending of formalized slavery.

We stand in solidarity with the Black community and the ongoing journey towards Black liberation.

ABOUT JESSA CALDERON:

Jessa is a Tongva, Chumash, and Yoeme songwriter, poet, hip-hop artist, performer, hypnotherapist, massage therapist, and energy worker who also offers guided meditations. By offering tools, Jessa encourages our community and youth to find their healing mentally, physically and spiritually through her words, music and practices. For over 10 years Jessa has worked with community and youth from many Nations, helping them find themselves while helping them to feel good about themselves.

We were very excited to screen “Cielo,” the debut film of our new Filmmaking class at our annual Spring Concert last week. The screening featured a discussion with the film’s student co-director, Sabrina Sosa. Sabrina shared how the class overcame the storytelling, planning, and logistical aspects of filmmaking, and how proud she was of her class’s work.

The class is currently wrapping up production of their second film, a very creative take on the horror genre. We are proud of our students’ hard work and dedication, and super grateful to our teaching artist, Luis Horacio Pineda (@luishoraciopineda), for so effectively and engagingly sharing his passion for the craft and his ability to uplift the creativity and vision of his students.

ABOUT CIELO: The film shares the story of a young musician who enters a competition with a $1,000 prize, which he hopes will pay for his little sister’s much-needed glasses. He overcomes the self-doubt that led to his initial failure, triumphantly winning the competition, and more importantly, the funds needed to purchase Cielo’s glasses. Students were at the forefront of every aspect of the process; from writing the script, storyboarding, to acting, directing, editing, and post-production

We love to see our students learn, grow, and teach

We love to see our students learn, grow, and teach us something new! Students at our partner school site, Bunche Middle School, participated in Compton Unified’s Steamfest, an event held for all CUSD schools to highlight their STEAM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math), and the accomplishment of students in these programs.

Participants of our Newcomers English Learning program showcased their English and learned music production skills in digital audio workstations like Ableton, taking time to teach YMF staff, students, and other families how to make their own beats.

CUSD’s “Art And Technology: Innovating for a Better World”, Steamfest was held at Compton College. Student projects in coding, fashion design, music production, mechanical engineering, and more were impressive and inspiring. Live performances were featured as well, including student created Rap music, choreography, and the Early College Marching Band.

Last week YMF participated in The Fremont Wellness

Last week YMF participated in The Fremont Wellness Fair which provided students and their families with health, art, and community empowerment resources and opportunities. Taking place at Fremont High School, we set up a music tech station demonstrating the online digital audio workstation, BandLab, promoted our music and media arts classes, and connected with students and their families on how they engage with music. More than 80 students were in attendance and each student had a “passport card” where they were encouraged to visit different tables (arts, community, health), and were eligible to win a raffle.

It was wonderful to hear how students were exploring the arts on their own, whether they had music lessons, were looking to pick up an instrument again, or were interested in filmmaking and acting.

Los South Central Players rocked the house this weekend at The Annual Music Fiesta over at A Place Called Home! Playing their classics like “Earth Angel” by Penguins and also some new tunes like “Hasta La Raiz” by Natalia Lafourcade, our student ensemble performed amongst family, friends, and community!
