Please welcome our newest YMF Staffer, Youth Arts Ambassador, Cathie Arteaga! 👏 Cathie is a visual artist, filmmaker, photographer, and community advocate using digital media to uplift and empower.

🎥 Her work as a digital storyteller is deeply rooted in the belief that creativity has the power to heal, connect, and drive meaningful change. Also a longtime student of YMF and Director of our second student film, “Echoes,” we are thrilled to introduce filmmaker, Cathie as our colleague.

🎨 You can expect to see her fresh perspectives influence our digital media and her voice in our multigenerational community engagement efforts. Thank you for joining YMF, Cathie!

🎺 Our flagship ensemble had the opportunity to play this in the legendary Dunbar Hotel at the Central Avenue Jazz Festival last year.

We are so grateful to be creating art and music in a place with such a rich, groundbreaking musical history as Historic South Central Los Angeles.

Thank you Aaron Araujo, Supervisor Holly Mitchell and the Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture! Aaron just completed a six month internship at YMF helping with administration and education, boosting our professional development at supporting our Teaching Artists.

We are happy that shadowing our Teaching Artists helped expand his skill around modeling, behavior management, and what does and does not work in a classroom. Aaron’s goal was to teach music and we are delighted to say that he is now a music instructor. Best of luck in all of your endeavors, Aaron!

📣 Creative drop-In hours are officially open on Tuesdays for people ages 16-24! We have refreshments, Mac computers, people to help answer questions, microphones, instruments, audio interfaces, cameras, and mixing and filmmaking software.

🎙️You can work on your project/s independently or if you have questions, or are wondering what music production or filmmaking entails, you are welcome here! You do not need to be a formal YMF student to use this space. This is a place to meet other young artists working creatively.

We are so grateful to Evelin Alvarado, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture, and Supervisor Holly Mitchell for connecting us with our Community Engagement Intern for the past six months. Her many contributions to YMF will live on in our media and archives, as we look forward to her continued journalism and community organization making a difference in Los Angeles.

On her last day, we asked if she wanted to learn to play the drums before she goes, swipe to see her jam with our Executive Director, Walter Zooi!

Thank you to the parents and guardians of our YMF Center students who came out to explore the work we do in schools and how they can support their student’s learning.

Everyone introduced themselves by the schools their kids go to and the instruments they’re playing. We played bingo with songs, had snacks, and broke into smaller groups to have more personal discussions.

We appreciate all that these parents, guardians and caregivers do to support kids studying creative arts and we look forward to meeting again, soon!

Gracias a los padres y tutores de nuestros estudiantes del Centro YMF que vinieron a explorar el trabajo que hacemos en las escuelas y cómo pueden apoyar el aprendizaje de sus estudiantes.

Todos se presentaron por los colegios a los que van sus hijos y los instrumentos que tocan. Jugamos al bingo con canciones, tomamos un tentempié y nos dividimos en grupos más pequeños para mantener conversaciones más personales.

YMF Teaching Artists (TAs) and student drummer, Víctor, perform this beautiful new song, “El Gavilán,” written by our Guitar TA, @abadguitar Andy Abad.

🎸“Mr. Andy,” is a master guitarist, music producer and multiple Latin GRAMMY nominee who also teaches at USC and has played for legends like Marc Anthony and Backstreet Boys. Maybe someday, we will see this song nominated, too!

🥁 Shoutout to Victor on the drums, one of our very dedicated students who truly embodies the interdisciplinary potential of our curriculum. At YMF, Victor studies drums, harp, music production, and filmmaking.

He is also the drummer for our flagship ensemble, Los South Central Players, and comfortably stepped in here to play new music with professional musicians. Victor’s contributions can be heard on the track “Sofia” and in the sound editing for our second student film, “Echoes.” 🎥

We are so excited to see what he does next! 👏

Thank you to @calstatela and Dr. Anne Larson for providing the opportunity for our Teaching Artists (TAs) to certify in AIYDA© – Activating Intentional Youth Development. Dr. Larson is a Kinesiology Professor at Cal State LA and founder of AIYDA© that trains youth development professionals to design activities that develop core social-emotional learning skill competencies which foster youth thriving.

We look forward to continuing our professional development work with Dr. Larson and are excited to start implementing her strategic programming design to more intentionally support the skills people of all ages need to thrive.

Introducing our newest team member, Ari Garcia! Ari (she/her) was raised in South LA. For the past 16 years, she has advocated for underserved communities through various organizations focusing on improving inequities in affordable housing, immigration, health, and education.

Ari has also been a member of the steering committee for Promotoras con Alma, a coalition that collectively supports promoters to create change in communities all over California. She was the program manager for the Hollywood Youth Orchestra at Harmony Project and we are elated she has joined the Young Musician’s Foundation as our Programs and Events Coordinator. Welcome, Ari!

This year’s K-8 Winter concerts at Sacred Heart Elementary School were a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students and their instructors.
