This quarter’s guitar class demonstration features our 8-17 year old students playing Juan Gabriel’s Amor Eterno ❤️ Many thanks to YMF teaching artist Manuel de Jesus Sandoval @chuy.sandoval.1 for stepping up and guest hosting the demonstration for Andy Abad @abadguitar, the class’s instructor who was unable to be there due to illness. We’re always amazed by the progress Andy makes with his students, all of them in the video are beginners!

La demostración de la clase de guitarra de este trimestre muestra a nuestros estudiantes de 8 a 17 años tocando Amor Eterno de Juan Gabriel Muchas gracias al maestro de YMF Manuel de Jesús Sandoval por sustituir a Andy Abad, el instructor de la clase que no pudo estar allí debido a una enfermedad. After ten years of inspired and inspiring service, Margot Smith Thomas is steppping down as Board Chair. We are profoundly grateful for her unwavering dedication, strategic guidance, and especially her embrace of change. With her unique sense of humor and grace, Margot deftly guided us through one of the most significant periods of change and growth in YMF’s history. Simply put, YMF would not be the organization we are today without her.

Margot’s involvement with YMF has spanned many years. Prior to her chairpersonship, she served on many important subcommittees as a board member, as well as a volunteer and philanthropist.

We are grateful to report that Margot will continue to serve on the YMF Board of Directors.

Tras diez años de inspirado e inspirador servicio, Margot Smith Thomas finaliza su cargo como Presidenta de la Junta Directiva. Le estamos profundamente agradecidos por su inquebrantable dedicación, su orientación estratégica y, sobre todo, su receptividad al cambio. Con su sentido del humor y su gracia únicos, Margot nos ha guiado hábilmente a través de uno de los periodos de cambio y crecimiento más significativos de la historia de YMF. We are so incredibly proud of our student ensemble, Los South Central Players, here performing the iconic Como La Flor by the great Selena Quintanilla at our 2024 Winter Concert. The Players were led by our violin Teaching Artist, Pablo Mendez Granadino, who stepped in on behalf of their conductor, Eloy Adame. Huge thank you to everyone, they sound fantastic!

On December 1, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Community Safety Partnership Bureau (CSPB) and Operation Progress Los Angeles, co-hosted “The Pueblo Del Rio - South Park and Newton’s Santa’s 5K ‘Foot Pursuit’ Fun Run.” CSPB and Operation Progress Los Angeles aim was to raise funds from this event to help support our individual youth programs serving the various communities of South Los Angeles. YMF Executive Director Walter Zooi was honored to play the Star Spangled Banner on trumpet to kick off the race.

We’re excited to announce that @Jamey_Lamanna_Apollo has been unanimously elected as Chairperson of YMF’s board of directors. Jamey is Partner, Chief Information Officer at Apollo Management. He has held positions at Cadma Capital Partners, Lord, Abbett & Co. LLC and Goldman Sachs and brings with him considerable expertise Asset Management, Strategic Planning, Technology Management, Information Technology Strategy.

He is also a musician who has seen and experienced the life-changing benefits of music and music education. “I have been passionate about Music from an early age and truly believe in its ability to help people grow, express themselves, and heal,” expressed Jamey.

We are profoundly grateful to outgoing Board Chair Margot Smith Thomas for over 10 years of dedicated and visionary leadership. Margot will remain on the board.

Our students have worked so hard this year and we are excited to showcase their skills at our annual holiday concert! With performances from our flagship ensemble, Los South Central Players, these artists age 5-24 are ready to share what they have learned! It’s open to the public so everyone can come and celebrate them, they deserve all the applause.

We are so impressed with our filmmaking students! They not only scripted, shot and edited their current film, they’re finalizing production on the soundtrack they wrote! We’re so happy to see the interdisciplinary potential for music and image coming to fruition at the YMF Center for Music and Creative Technologies. This film class is just one of many tuition-free classes for people ages 5-24 at the YMF Center in South Central Los Angeles. Congratulations to our incredible Teaching Artist, master guitarist @abadguitar who plays on the album Bolero by @angela_aguilar_ which has been nominated for Album of the Year in the Latin GRAMMYs! Andy has been a guitarist for Jennifer Lopez and has toured with Marc Anthony, The Backstreet Boys, Josh Groban and Clay Aiken. His credits include music with Juan Gabriel, Pepe Aguilar, Joan Sebastian, and Paulina Rubio. He can be heard on Lady Gaga’s album “Born This Way” as well as Bonnie Raitt’s “Silver Lining,” Marc Anthony’s “Libre” and many more.

He is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated music producer and accomplished composer who has placed over 120 pieces of music for TV and film. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the USC Thornton School of Music, where he also teaches Popular Music. At YMF he is a treasured guitar instructor and we are so grateful our students get to learn from him. We will be watching the Latin GRAMMYs tonight and rooting for you Andy, we are honored to work with you.

At YMF, we aren’t just teaching how to play instruments, students are learning about exploring their creativity, self-reflection, healing through music, teamwork, skill, discipline, and striving for excellence in all their pursuits. YMF programs for music, film and media arts are built around the whole student, not just the musician, the film editor, or future creative director.

We understand how music brings culture, passion, love, and progression to our world. Music evokes powerful emotions that bond us across generations, strengthening our families and communities. It is important to us that students study music they enjoy, that inspires them and brings warmth to their loved ones. So, you might hear our musicians playing anything from Natalia Lafourcade, to Ed Sheeran or Tito Puente — because when kids tell us what they want to learn, we listen!

It was a beautiful celebration of loved ones at the 19th annual Dia de los Muertos festival held by @24thst last Saturday. The community altar was overflowing, the tributes and performances were incredible, the food was delicious and there was a lot of love shown by everyone for each other and those who came before us.

Our Los South Central Players put on a great show and we met lots of future YMF students who were excited to try our music production equipment and learn more about our tuition-free classes. We hope to see you there next year!

Fue una hermosa celebración de los seres queridos en el 19º festival anual del Día de los Muertos celebrado por 24th STreet Theatre el pasado sábado. El altar comunitario estaba a rebosar, los homenajes y las actuaciones fueron increíbles, la comida deliciosa y todo el mundo mostró mucho amor por los demás y por los que nos precedieron.

Their recent Understanding and Building Credit workshop, engagingly facilitated in both English and Spanish by Erika Castellanos, was a huge success, in terms of both attendance and impact. Our students and families gained a clearer and deeper understanding of what it takes to establish and successfully build credit in today’s economy.
