Tyra Popovich is a senior at Pitzer College studying Organizational Studies and Music. During her time at Pitzer, she has organized music festivals and other events across campus as well as performed with the Claremont Shades A Cappella group. Before Covid-19, she studied abroad in Paris, France. While there, she attended the Paris Institute of Political Studies where she took courses that met at the intersection between arts and politics such as “Music, Identity, and Politics in the Middle East” and “Representations of The United Nations in Film”. Outside of the classroom, she enjoyed exploring the rich Black music history of Paris and visiting different musical venues and locations where famous Black American artists performed during the early twentieth century. From her experiences both at Pitzer and abroad, Tyra has developed a strong passion for expanding access to music education, resources and opportunities to perform in low-income communities. She is extremely excited to work with YMF and to support the organization as they continue the transition to remote learning through the Online Music Academy.
Additionally, Tyra is interested in the racial climate of the U.S. Having grown up biracial in a predominantly white beach town, she hopes to reimagine and diversify the global surf community through surf therapy organizations. She is currently in the process of applying to international fellowships to conduct research on surf therapy organizations in South Africa. Tyra is extremely excited to work with YMF and to support the organization as they continue the transition to remote learning through the Online Music Academy.
